In many communities, silence is an expression of humility and inner reflection, associated with sacrifice and prayer. But when suffering cannot be named and shared, some injustices remain hidden and cannot be addressed.
On 10 October 2025, we met in Munich with a group of about 30 people, experts by experience, for an extensive exchange.
Sr. Marie-Pasquale Reuver explained the defence strategies of looking away and covering up, as well as the many reasons and types of silence and what it takes to break the silence and respond to it.
Dr Barbara Haslbeck summarised her recently published study on the subject of abuse of women religious.
Our Secretary General concluded with a brief overview of the different situations in Europe.
Conclusion: a great deal of awareness-raising and support is still needed before safeguarding can take important steps forward.
